Thee Barber Room
Owner: Ray Alfaro
Location: Gettysburg, PA
Purpose of Loan: Property Purchase and Renovation
Impact: Economic Security
Ray Alfaro has been his own boss since his teenage years. Motivated by his passion for cutting hair, he received his barber’s license from Champ’s Barber School (a Community First Fund Client) at the age of 17 and started running his own barbershop out of his home in Gettysburg. His one-man shop gained more and more popularity over the years, requiring him to work 12-hour days to keep up with demand. Realizing the opportunity for growth, he decided to embrace his entrepreneurial spirit and expand his business.
Realizing he needed to move his barbershop out of his home, Ray honed his business management skills and created a comprehensive business plan to launch an expanded shop with 10 employees. After finding an ideal location, he started making the rounds to traditional banks to obtain financing. He was turned down several times before he was referred to Community First Fund. We provided Ray with a loan to purchase the property, complete renovations, and install state-of-the-art equipment.
Thee Barber Room is now a flourishing modern-style barbershop that provides a fun and welcoming atmosphere featuring large screen TVs, video games, and other amenities. Ray and his team pride themselves on their punctual, quality service they provide for over 600 clients per week. Community First helped Ray grow his business, create employment opportunities for others, and ensure he will continue to be his own boss for years to come.
