City Cuts Barbershop

Owner: Jonathan Escueta
Location: Kutztown, PA
Business: Barbershop
Purpose of Loan: Expansion and Renovations
Impact: Economic Security

Jonathan Escueta founded City Cuts Barbershop when he recognized the need for an urban-style shop in the college town of Kutztown. Starting as a single barber in the rear section of a rented building, City Cuts quickly grew to employ a team of six that offers a variety of services, including haircuts, hair coloring, beard shaping, and more. As demand for the shop’s services grew, Jonathan needed additional space. He did not have to look far, as the front of City Cuts’ building was available for purchase and a perfect spot for expansion.

Jonathan was referred to Community First Fund after multiple traditional banks turned down his requests for financing. Our loan allowed him to purchase the property, complete necessary renovations, and purchase the equipment needed for the new shop. Today, City Cuts is a thriving business that also supports area youth by providing a safe space for them to play video games, shoot basketball, and complete homework after school. Jonathan also leads their unique Books for Kids program that encourages young clients to read a book aloud in the barber chair during their haircut. The barbers at City Cuts work together to help improve children’s reading skills and build their confidence.
